ABOUT DUTCH-GROWN

While you wait......
Follow us on a tour through Holland we hope you will find as fun and interesting as we do. The Nederlands have such a rich, vivid history and are literally alive today everywhere you look. Not only in the people you find but in the buildings, the streets, the canals, you can almost see the people that were there before you, and you stand in awe of the workmanship and mastercrafts that created such beauty. And if you think about the fact they have been standing for centuries and are still so amazing, well for us at Dutch Grown it all just adds to the meaning of what it is to be Dutch. To share a heritage with such a wealth of talent and determination, not everyone can boast such a thing. And as we like to say "Proud to be Dutch? Show it off!"

So, let us begin our journey today right here on the island of Marken where Dutch Grown was born. Twice.....

1968 - Stanley Appel (of Universe of Stanley Appel Design) was born to Jonge Jaap Appel and Sijtje Schipper of Marken. The son of proud people, he grew also to be proud, of who he was and where he came from. And as we all have in life, things happened to him that changed him, his outlook on life and especially his outlook on what it meant to be Dutch and how he didn't really see that pride around him as much as you did before. He started to talk to people he met, on the streets, with his colleagues, with friends and neighbors about the changes he saw and where it might be taking them and how not all of it was good for the people of Holland. He had more things happen in his life that again changed him and his outlook, and he spoke with more people and found out again, it was not only him but there were others also not happy with the outcome of their rights and priveliges from the Dutch echelon who were supposed to protect those rights for them. And as he listened he rememberd how it was meant to be, how people were supposed to be for each other, how things worked in the old days because of just that; people were there for the people.

So today Dutch Grown would like to become a supportive, listening and respected place that people can share; thier thoughts, their beliefs, their hopes, we want to talk about it, listen to it and come together with a solution if it's a problem, a congratulations if it's a positive, or just a chat if it's a discussion.

We have created the Dutch Grown label to show we are proud of where we grew up and the values and passion that comes along with it. You don't have to be Dutch to be Dutch Grown. You just have to believe in who you are and where you came from. But regardless, we hope you will help us make Dutch Grown a logo that represents Holland once again as it always has been - Proud. Show it off!

Marken is a peninsula in the IJsselmeer, in the Netherlands and a former island in the Zuiderzee, located in the municipality Waterland in the province North Holland. It is the namesake of the Markermeer, the body of water which surrounds it. Marken is a true relic of the traditional native culture of this area of Holland. It is a small community, its whole land mass is 3 km in length, 1.5 km wide with area approx. 4km2 with a population of only 1850, and yet this historic little site has nearly one million visitors per year, with their wooden cottages and 13th century charm it is easy to see what the attraction is. If you would ask a random person outside the Netherlands to mention a Dutch Island chances are high that you would get "Marken" as the answer. Any day during the visitors seasons you are guaranteed to hear far more languages than just Dutch spoken here. There is definitely a world wide curiosity about it, and it will surely always be so.
